Bogus caller warning

PEOPLE have been warned to be on their guard after a bogus caller posed as a council official.

The man visited a house in Shooting Field, Steyning, and asked if the householder would be interested in selling part of their garden.

Both Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council confirmed to police that the man was not calling on their behalf, adding they would not operate in such a way. The man is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, aged in his early 40s and of stocky build. He had an ID card, which was shown quickly, and drove a red estate car with a white roof rack.

Police urged residents, especially the elderly, to always be on their guard with unexpected callers, even if they had a uniform or ID.
