BOGUS GAS OFFICIAL STRIKES

Just after midday on December 3, a resident received a phone call from a man purporting to be from British Gas.

The man claimed he wanted to check the resident's gas meter, and asked questions about when he would be out of the house.

The householder became suspicious and telephoned British Gas, who stated that the man was definitely not an employee of theirs.

Police have warned people to be wary about giving out personal details over the telephone.

Sergeant Dave Price said: "If anyone has any doubts about the authenticity of a caller I would advise them to phone the utility company directly to check. If the caller is genuine they will never object to this. Anyone else receiving a call such as this should inform the Police.'
