Bogus puppy buyers prey on Angmering great-granny

A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER in Angmering has fallen victim to, arguably, one of the most bizarre distraction burglaries in the village.

Margery Coomber, of Palmer Road, was targeted by “dog-nappers” who are believed to have stolen one of her five-week-old Chihuahua-cross puppies.

The 74-year-old great-grandmother of 11 had advertised the puppies online and was delighted when she received a call from a woman called Caroline, claiming to be keen to view the litter of pups.

Last Tuesday the woman, along with her partner and their two young children, turned up at Margery’s home, on the premise of purchasing one of the puppies.

“It seemed completely normal. I had no reason to suspect anything,” said Margery.

“They came in, asked a couple of questions and seemed really friendly.”

The couple left their children in the sitting room while talking to Margery in the kitchen, beside the Chihuahuas.

Margery said she then become concerned about the toddlers and went to investigate. A few moments later, the husband came rushing out and said they had to leave, adding they would be back with the cash for the pup later.

Minutes later Margery noticed one of the puppies had been taken.

“I just couldn’t believe it. I was so shocked. I just didn’t know why they would do this. It was despicable,” she said.

The couple, who claimed to be from Findon, are said to both be in their mid-20s, with local accents.

The woman, who called herself Caroline, was of medium build with unkempt, shoulder-length brown hair. Her partner was of slim build, with a small moustache and facial stubble. He had short, mousey-brown hair.

The police are investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information to call them, on 101.
