Bonfire tolight upthe town Saturday

The streets will be transformed into a river of fire as bonfire societies and drummers take part in a torchlit procession .

The event is the biggest of the year and ends with a huge bonfire and spectacular fireworks display on The Salts.

The procession sets off from Tilling Green at 19.50pm and there will be road closures in place from 6.30pm.

Highlights of the procession include Rye’s famous burning boat and a fire breathing dragon.

Tilling Green residents will have their own float for the first time in many years.

The big night now costs £10,000 to stage and while it is free to spectators, Rye Bonfire Society is urging those who attend to dig deep and make generous contributions, which will help local charities and good causes.

A Bonfire Society spokesman said: “This is a traditional Sussex custom, not a carnival or ordinary fireworks display, it can be loud and frightening, there will be fire and very loud bangs.

“Keep children with you and do not push them to the front. If you are nervous or worried, we suggest you keep away. Do not bring pets to the bonfire.
