Terry Davies, of South Terrace, was killed when a fire engulfed the front of his flat, in South Terrace, on September 12, last year.

The investigation was passed to Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team when investigators from West Sussex Fire and Rescue discovered the blaze had been started deliberately using white spirit.

Officers have now arrested a 29-year-old Bognor man in connection with the crime, who this evening remains in police custody.

Earlier this month, detectives linked two other incidents involving accelerants to the blaze that killed Mr Davies.

Police said that white spirit had been poured in front of a home in nearby Baysford Road, Littlehampton, and a car was set alight in Granville Road just hours before for the fatal fire.

A post-mortem examination showed Mr Davies, who worked at Morrisons, in Wick, died from the effects of breathing in smoke.

Four other people were taken to hospital.

Police are still appealing for anyone, with any information about the crime, to come forward and contact them on 101, quoting Operation Annexe.

Detective Inspector John Wallace said: “A young man lost his life that night because someone started a fire and we need to find out who is responsible.

“We are appealing to anyone who may hold any information, however small, which will help us with our enquiries and bring justice to Terry’s family.”

Updates to follow.
