Bridge success in keeping pupils off road in Eatergate

Parents and pupils are enjoying a safe route to Eastergate Primary School.

The improved journeys in the worst of the winter weather have been made possible thanks to a new bridge.

The opening of the structure was reported in the Observer last September and was welcomed at the time by mums and their children. Their enthusiasm has been sustained. A recent survey of parents has found that positive response continuing.

A new cycle shed built as part of the 21,000 county council project to provide a safer route is frequently full as well.

Jude Holland, the school's headteacher, said: "The bridge continues to be a great success story."

She has told the county council of her satisfaction with the work.

Cllr Derek Whittington, the council's member in charge of strategic planning and transport, stated: "I am pleased this has made such a big difference to the lives of the children who go to Eastergate Primary School.

"Safer Routes to Schools projects continue to be rolled out across West Sussex.

"This one in Eastergate is a good example of how the grant money it brings can be used in a way that's specific to the community."

The 15m-long bridge crosses a rife which separates the Church Lane school's grounds from Westergate Community School and enables a path to be used instead of the main roads.
