Brighton bucks national house prices trend

Research from Halifax revealed the seaside city is third in the UK for house price rises in 2017, with properties costing on average £38,289 more than they did in 2016.

Halifax said in 2017 the average house price in Brighton was £374,662, an 11.4 per cent rise on the £336,374 average house price the year before.

Cheltenham in Gloucestershire topped the list with a 13 per cent rise, with Bournemouth in Dorset coming second with 11.7 per cent.

Following Brighton in fourth place was West Sussex town Crawley, with house prices up 10.4 per cent, from £293,105 in 2016 to £323,660 in 2017.

Other towns and cities making the top 20 included Newham (10.2%), Peterborough (10.1%), Gloucester (9.5%), Huddersfield (9.3%) and Exeter (9.1%).

Russell Galley, managing director of Halifax, said: “A number of towns and cities have recorded significant rises in house prices over the past year, with all of the top 20 performers recording growth of at least double the national average.

“Unlike last year, the top performers are not exclusive to London and the South East, with the top spot now belonging to Cheltenham in the South West, and towns in East Anglia, East Midlands, North West, Wales and Yorkshire and the Humber also making the list.”
