Building New Homes

BUILDING work on 35 new family homes in Wick began in earnest on Friday when the foundations were dug at the Clun Road site during a special ceremony.

Arun District Council chairman Jacqui Maconachie was joined by Chichester Diocesan Housing Association chairman John Gatward to check everything was in order.

Austere flat-blocks, labelled by many as outdated and "Stalinist", were demolished earlier this year to make way for the much more appealing housing association development.

Arun district councillor Mike Northeast is delighted his ward will benefit from the new housing.

He said: "I don't think anybody is going to shed any tears for the old flats. The locals have been pushing for these new houses for many years, now.

"We are going to provide proper housing, with gardens and parking spaces.

"The old flats were just not suitable places in this day and age to bring up families."

The Chichester Diocesan Housing Association bought the land from Arun District Council, which supported the association's bid for almost 1.3million to pay for the demolition and rebuilding.

The homes, due to be completed in January next year, will be a mixture of two, three and four-bedroom houses, some specially adapted for disabled people.
