Burial land is bought

EXTRA burial space has been bought in North Bersted.

Arun District Council has purchased two plots of land in front of the Chalcraft Lane cemetery at a recent auction.

A council spokeswoman said: “Purchasing the land will give the council up to an extra 20 years of burial space in Chalcraft Lane.

“This is on top of the 15 to 20 years we currently have.

“It also gives us the opportunity to consider other types of burials, such as green burials, which we are currently asking residents their views on through the Your Council 2013-17 consultation.

“Until the land is needed for burials, it will be used to provide extra open space.”

The price guide for one of the plots, measuring some 2.2 acres, was £40,000-£50,000 and £50,000-£60,000 for the other of about 1.42 acres.

The council has not disclosed how much it paid for the land.

The larger plot is circular and was described in the sale particulars as overgrown with mature trees and shrubs and with the potential for development.

The smaller piece of land was previously used for grazing and was also said to be suitable for possible building.
