UPDATE: In last week's column it stated that £190 was raised by the After 8's at their coffee morning. This total was incorrect as the ladies had a fantastic lot of support and raised £1,042 which will be shared between Macmillan Nurses and Admiral Nurses. Well done to the After 8's and thank you to all who supported them. It also said that the Lenten Soup Lunch in aid of Mary's Meals, a charity which gives meals to orphaned children in 12 different countries only raised £50. Apologies for this but we omitted the three to make it £350 for the fund. Well done to both the Burwash churches and their supporters for a great event with delicious soups.

CLEANING: Once again the village streets were looked after on Saturday, the signs were washed and the verges cleared. Thank you to all those who gave their time for this voluntary work. It seems that some people aren’t as proud of the villages as others as I have heard complaints of yet more dog fouling along the High Street. There really is no need for dog owners not to clear up behind their pets, especially now there are special bins along the street to deposit it in. Please everyone be responsible and use the bins.

CHURCH NEWS: The congregation of St Bartholomew’s Church invite you all to join them in a special service today, Good Friday. The service will consist of the story of Easter and songs with hot cross bun. This is a family service and starts at 10am. Then after lunch is the hours before the cross service at 2pm. On Sunday will be Parish Communion and lighting of the new fire. St Philip’s Burwash Common, will join the congregation at Union Church Heathfield at 11am for Walk of the Witness with a procession and readings and hymns. Then on Sunday there will be a Parish Communion at 11am followed by an Easter egg hunt. Everyone is welcome to attend these services.

QUIZ: The next monthly quiz evening at the Pavilion in Burwash Common will take place tonight, Friday, at 8pm. Teams of six are welcome to go along and join in the fun. The licenced bar will be open and sausages for supper. All entry money is returned as prizes to the winners.

BATEMAN’S: For the children during the Easter holiday why not visit Bateman’s and let them follow the Cadbury Easter Trail. At the end they will find a Cadbury Egghead if the complete the eggy quest. Normal admission plus £2.50 applies. For more details call 882302. This will be from now until April 11, from 11am to 5pm.

LOOKING AHEAD: Here are some of the events to look out for in April. The Monday Quilters are holding a Patchwork Quilt exhibition on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10, in the village hall. A lot of the clubs and associations will be holding their AGMs including the Playing Fields Association and the short mat bowls club.

BOWLS: The team have played three more games since my last report. The first was away to Hailsham Martlets. Triples Margaret Waterhouse, Mary Taylor and Alan Green won 14-7, Wayne Reed, Angela Marden and Gavin Wood lost 12-14. Pairs Cherry Taylor and Alec Martin won 14-12 and Keith Marden and Keith Wood won 15-9. The next match was away to Hadlow Down, Triples Joan Howard, Margaret and Alan won 13-6 and Wayne, Angela and Gavin won 14-10. Pairs Cherry and Alec lost 10-13 and the two Keith’s won 15-11. The last game was at home to Barcombe and triples Mary, Angela and Gavin won 24-3, Joan and Keith Marden and Alan won 15-8. Pairs Cherry and Alec won 14-8 and Julie Hawkins and Keith Wood won 21-8. This gave the team 22 more league points. Our final game will be on Tuesday away to Ringmer Hares.
