Burwash

Postcard from Canada: As I start the last full week of my stay here in Canada I begin to feel excited about coming home but sad to be on the verge of leaving my lovely family out here. My Aunt Mary is my Dad’s sister and was a war bride who arrived here in Canada in 1945. She and her late husband Caldwell had eight children. The extended family is very large but they are all so welcoming. We had a great day in Fredericton, the capitol of New Brunswick, on Saturday, celebrating three of the cousins birthdays. Driving along the highway you can see that Autumn is approaching as the leaves are changing with every colour from yellow to red. Friday night we were lucky enough to be able to see some of the spectacular Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) from Gail’s back yard. It was quite something. Apparently we should have been able to see it for several nights, but Friday was the only clear one so we were indeed lucky.

WW1 Exhibition: Have you had a chance to visit the exhibition in All Saints Church in Old Heathfield yet. Today is mostly given over to the pupils of the local schools for education. But tonight there is a concert of music, readings and poetry of the era, with various musicians including Battle Brass Band. Tickets are 6 pounds and available at the door. A collection and raffle will be held for Help For Heroes. Tomorrow the exhibition is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm. In the evening the event will move to the Broad oak village hall for a quiz with a WW1 feel, including the ration meal. Call Jean Barnes on 01453 863784 to book a table at 10 pounds per person. The final day will conclude with exhibition open in the afternoon and a civic and United churches songs of praise in All Saints at 6.30pm. The whole commemoration will support the Royal British Legion, Heathfield community college and Heathfield parish Council.

Lunch Club: The Burwash Branch of Age UK are holding their next monthly lunch club meeting on Monday, at the Bear Motel at 12 noon. Anyone 55 and over are welcome to go along and join them. This is a great way to make new friends while enjoying a freshly cooked hot meal, with no washing up afterwards! I costs 8 pounds a person. To book a place please call Jean Plummer on 021435 883483. Coffee Morning: Next Saturday morning, 27th, there is to be a coffee morning in the scout hut in aid of MacMillan nurses. It is being run by Jazz & Eric Botting and Heather & Barry Lewis and their friends. They would be grateful for any donations towards the tombola, bric a brac & cake stalls and the raffle. Ice show: There is to be a coach trip to the Brighton Centre to see the spectacular Holiday on Ice in the new year. The cost of this including coach and admin is 31 pounds for adults and 24 for children. The coach will leave Burwash at 2.30pm and be back by 8.30pm on Sunday 11 January and will pick up at suitable places en-route.
