Burwash

Oh what fun the Burwash festive evening was. The weather remained dry but cool and plenty of families turned out to enjoy the festivities. There were some great craft stalls in the Bear, a Christmas hamper raffle, Santa’s Grotto, and drum band playing, real reindeer, jugglers and magician, a barbecue and more. All the high street businesses stayed open and everyone had fun. Thank you to those who organised this annual evening and those that went along to help.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas charity bingo evening last Friday, be it as a player, donating prizes or more importantly helping. The evening was great fun and after expenses saw a profit of £275 towards the Christmas day lunch for those who will be on their own.

The Call my Bluff evening at the Burwash Common pavilion was a sell out. With a panel of three trying to bluff their way through explanations of the meaning of words, Burwash beauties for supper the evening was a huge success. Well done to the bluffers and those who did the hard work organising the event.

Tonight the St Bartholomew’s church Christmas tree festival begins. The children of burwash primary school get to preview it from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Then the grand opening will be from 7-9pm with mulled wine and mince pies, tickets event at £10. Call Vicky Patterson on 01435 884135. On Saturday the church will be open from 10am to 4pm with refreshments and entertainment and again on Sunday from 10am to 5pm., Both with free entrance. At 5pm on Sunday a Carol service will formally close the festival. There will be a raffle each day.

On Monday the members of the Not so Young club will have their annual Christmas lunch, meeting with friends at the Bear Motel. They will enjoy a three course festive meal, while chatting with friends and soaking up the festive atmosphere. They will have a Christmas raffle towards club funds. This is a advanced booking event and much enjoyed by those who go.

The Children of Burwash C of E Primary school will be holding their Carol service in St Bartholomew’s church at 6pm. They would be delighted if you were to join their friends and family to hear them sing and tell the story of Jesus’ birth.

The mobile library will be in the village on Thursday, your last chance to get books in readiness for a cosy Christmas read by the fire. It will be at the Catholic Church car park from 12 noon to 12.30pm and then at rother View from 1.25pm to 1.45pm then on to Vicarage road Burwash Common from 2 to 2.20pm. It will then go on to Etchingham village hall for 3.10 to 3.50pm. The library is free to use and is open to all. disabled access is available too. books can be kept for four weeks although the library visits every two weeks. do support it and help to keep it coming.

On Sunday the members of the Burwash short Mat bowls club will enjoy their festive meal at the village hall. The ladies will prepare and cook the meal while the gentlemen either help with the table and decorations or play bowls. It is always a fun day which ends with the awarding of the yearly trophies.

The post boxes are in place for the Brownie Christmas post. There is one in the Burwash News Agents and one in Javris’ the Butchers. It will cost 25p per card, half the cost of a second class postage stamp, and the money and cards can be put in to the boxes. Last post will be next friday 21st at 4pm, with delivery on either 22nd or 23rd December. Only the immediate village area will be the route as the girls will be on foot.
