Bus cut bid scrapped

A PLAN to cut the number of buses to the Nevill and Malling estates has been scrapped.

East Sussex County Council was considering slashing the 128 service and wrote to people warning them of possible changes.

But the option to reduce the number of buses proved unpopular and prompted about 500 people to sign a petition calling for the service to remain at full strength.

The county council has now decided to keep the bus service and add a further service.

A spokesman for East Sussex County Council said: 'The 128 bus will not only run as before but with an added early evening service to the Neville Estate.

'We are letting people know and the updated timetable will be available in time for the start of the revised service on July 28.'

The council said the reduction in the service had been considered because of 'financial constraints'.

Cllr Ann De Vecchi, leader of Lewes District Council, welcomed the decision not to cut the service.

She said: 'I think it's brilliant and it shows that all the people who wrote to the council and signed the petition managed to get their message across.

'It would have been a nonsense to cut public transport in Lewes.

'It's a victory for the public in a congested town.'
