Butterfly haven takes shape at Brighthelm Centre gardens

Six months in the planning, the emerging "butterfly bank" in the Brighthelm Centre gardens is being built using pure chalk and planted with hundreds of locally-sourced wildflowers to represent the species-rich grasslands of the South Downs. The bank will attract all sorts of pollinating insects, including bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and beetles - as well as showcasing native flora. Eventually, the plants will cover the chalk. It is the creation of Rich Howorth, Brighton and Hove City Council's biosphere officer, and a team of volunteers.
