Call for ban on juggernauts

A BAN on juggernauts using unclassified roads across West Sussex has been called for following concerns about the deterioration of the routes and problems over pot-holes.

The roads make up half the county's highways network and the county council is now counting the cost of heavy goods vehicles using them as a short cut.

A meeting in Chichester heard one county councillor blame the juggernauts for causing damage to roads unsuitable for them to use.

The county council's strategic environmental services select committee was told that 20 per cent of the unclassified network was defective, needing some structural maintenance.

This compared with a figure of nine per cent for A roads and 10 and 12 per cent for B and C roads.
