Calling all WIs – let’s celebrate 100 years of jam and Jerusalem!

It’s been 100 years since the first Women’s Institute branch was opened in the UK – and the Littlehampton Gazette is determined to help celebrate a century of jam and Jerusalem.

Sussex has the honour of being home to the first WI to be opened in England – Singleton & East Dean –which still meets on the third Thursday of the month.

The first in the UK was Llanfair PG, on Anglesey, North Wales.

The WI came to the UK in 1915 while the country was fighting the First World War.

It was formed to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supplies of the war-torn nation.

Things have obviously changed a lot since then but there must be an endless supply of tales to be told about life in the WI, its achievements and its place in the community.

The Gazette would like to invite WI members, their families and friends to share those tales to help build a picture of an organisation which has become as much a part of British life as fish and chips.
