The Observer contacted the University and College Union after learning the Hastings campus was under review in a bid to find out how staff might be affected.

However, the UCU said members had not been made aware of the review until it appeared on the Observer website.

UCU regional official, Michael Moran, said: “We are very disappointed that the first staff have heard of the potential closure of their campus is via the local paper.

“We hope that going forward, the University of Brighton will fully involve the union and staff, giving them a proper say in their own futures and the future of university education in Hastings.”

As reported yesterday, the university has said it is reviewing its Hastings campus after failing to enrol the numbers of students needed for its ‘original vision’.

However, past and present students were quick to jump to the campus’ defence on our social network pages, with many praising the smaller, more personal feel of Hastings.

Writing on our Facebook page, Maddie Thomson said: “Hastings is a fantastic campus with a close knit feel.

“It has such a relaxed, friendly and non-cliquey atmosphere.

“To close it would be a travesty to the town.

“I appreciate it may not be the most typical ‘university experience’, but this was made clear on open days.

“I think what sets the campus apart is its ability to recognise that people have lives and other commitments outside of uni, and students are supported with this.

“I’m in my second year and the teaching and support from staff is amazing – you are treated as a name rather than a number.

“I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I don’t think I would have had the confidence to go to uni if there wasn’t a campus in Hastings.

“The uni was very supportive for students living at home and, despite my initial fears, I have made amazing friends.”
