Calls to lock garages and sheds

Police urge people ward off opportunist thieves by locking their garages and sheds.

Officers have said people should never leave a garage or shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house.

"Not only do most sheds contain expensive tools but also tools that could be used to break into the house," said spokeswoman Jill Pedersen

"Ladders should always be locked away to stop a thief from using them.

"Expensive garden machinery can be anchored to the fabric of the garage or shed, preferably the floor, with a high tensile cable and close shackle lock," she added.

A shed alarm, costing 6, is available from the local Neighbourhood Watch Association by contacting Ivor Webb, Neighbourhood Watch on 0845 60 70 999 ext 81214.
