Campaign to revamp Hove Lagoon skate park

A redevelopment campaign for the skate park at Hove Lagoon is underway, after users say it has fallen into disrepair.

Liam Teague, manager of Brighton Youth Centre Skatepark, is working alongside Brighton & Hove Skateparks’ Association on the first steps of the redevelopment campaign.

He said: “Skate parks have proved to be successful all over the city. This is about creating awareness with local residents and youths in the surrounding areas.”

With support from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth and the Friends of Hove Lagoon Community Group, the redevelopment has started with a short online survey.

The survey can be found at www.brightonyouthcentre.org.uk/skatepark and will be running until late November, gathering opinions and information from users, parents and residents.

Mr Teague said one of the main aims is to hear from people who do not use the skate park and their thoughts surrounding the potential changes.

As a once regular user of the skate park himself, Mr Teague believes the area is more family-friendly than The Level in central Brighton, offering an alternative for users.

Once the survey is completed the information will be presented to Brighton and Hove City Council and the campaigners can begin trying to find supporting grants from trusts in the city.

Mr Teague said: “We hope to encourage young people who are skateboarding as skate parks prove to be a positive facility for everybody in terms of both social and physical aspects.”
