Can you tell who they are yet?

A MYSTERY which has had pub customers scratching their heads for years has finally been solved.

Artist John Henson painted a picture of Steyning High Street, featuring many of the town's well-known figures, and donated it to the Chequer Inn in 1981.

Unlike the painting, memories have faded over the years and many a debate has raged over just who is who in the painting.

With help from customers at the High Street pub and a little bit of modern technology, a smaller version of the picture has been created, identifying the 34 people depicted.

Chequer Inn general manager Aaron Comber said: "We spoke to a lot of the locals who come in and they did quite a lot of research for us.

"There were quite a few people we were not sure about and there were a few arguments over people's names."

Aaron's younger brother, Eliott, took a digital photograph of the picture and went through the painstaking process of naming each of the people in it, before producing the solution to the painted puzzle.

The new digital image now hangs alongside the original painting in the pub's snug, with every character numbered and then named in a key below.

Aaron added: "It took him a little while to do, but he's a bit of a whizz at these things. He also designed the pub's website, the first one he had ever done."

Many well-known local faces are shown in the painting, including former Chequer Inn landlord Colin Garlick, David Humphreys and Noah Coleman. John Henson also painted himself into the picture; he is shown driving a cart outside the pub.

Aaron said: "It is a bit of a talking point. I think people wanted a record of who was in the painting because so many people in the picture have died and they shouldn't be forgotten."
