CASH FOR ANTI-BURNER GROUP

The council wants it to use the money to spread knowledge to the public about other waste disposal methods.

The decision was not entirely supported at Lewes District Council's cabinet meeting on Thursday last week, despite the fact the council supports DOVE's aims.

Members were told that DOVE had no management accounts.

It had a credit balance of 1,976 against which there was an outstanding amount of 4,637.

Cllr Norman Turner said there was no way the council should spend money on an organisation that appeared to be insolvent.

'Not from my pocket, brothers,' he added.

But Cllr David Neighbour said: 'On the other hand there is merit in an organisation resisting the incinerator.

'I say give them the money. They are doing a good job.'

Cllr Elizabeth Lee said: 'They are a campaigning organisation that are doing a great deal of work. They are not accountants.'

Cllr Susan Bratchie asked what control the council would have over the accuracy of information put out by Dove.

It could be scaremongering, she added.

Chairman, Cllr Ann de Vecchi pointed out that the oganisation was rowing in the same direction as the council on the incinerator issue.

Cllr Shirley James wondered if other pressure groups would come forward for grants if this request was allowed.

She was told all requests were considered on their merit.
