Cash pours in to protect flood areas

TWO neighbouring seaside villages and a third, up in the South Downs, are to benefit from the latest share-out of grants from West Sussex County Council’s Operation Watershed fund to help protect communities from flooding.

East Preston Parish Council has been awarded just over £30,000, with most of the cash going on work to reinstate a ditch and install a new drain, and the remainder paying for water-jetting and investigating the need for CCTV at Sea Lane.

Neighbouring Kingston Parish Council receives £2,640 for pipe works and ditch works in Kingston Lane.

In Amberley, £23,000 will be spent on a CCTV survey of drains in the village and to clear ditches, following a successful application to the fund by the parish council.

The three villages in the Gazette area were among 13 communities affected by the severe flooding in 2012 to be awarded grants in the latest round of funding by Operation Watershed.

The scheme was launched to reduce the impact of flooding in the future, backed by an £8.25m fund, and followed the heaviest rainfall to hit West Sussex in more than a century in June, 2012.
