Castle worker’s pier to pier walk raises £520 for cancer charity

HEAVY rain and strong winds met one woman who completed a pier to pier walk in just over eight hours for charity.

Amberley Castle employee Chanel Goodman, 22, from Worthing, walked the 22 miles from Worthing to Brighton pier and back again to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

She said: “I was so happy it took eight and half hours. It was so hard though, I’m in so much pain today (Monday). I’m walking like a penguin.”

Although joined by family and friends, Chanel and her mum, Caz Goodman, were the only two to complete the walk, but Chanel said the others did a ‘fantastic job’.

The walk took place on Sunday December 11 and Chanel said that the weather ‘was very bad with heavy rain and very strong winds’, and by the end they were ‘absolutely soaked’.

As well as the support from family and friends, which Chanel says was ‘amazing’, they even had people driving past hooting their car horns, stopping and giving them money.

Chanel took on the challenge to raise money for the charity as five years ago her grandmother, Jacqueline Carn, was diagnosed with cancer, but was later given the all-clear.

However, a couple of months ago a visit to the hospital found that the cancer had come back.

“I was absolutely devastated,’ Chanel told The County Times before the walk.

“All I could think was I didn’t want her to go through all of the dramatic times we went through last time.”

Chanel said: “It is so amazing I have raised so much money, it is brilliant, and my nan said to me the other day that she is so proud, it made me cry it meant so much to me.”

So far she has raised £520. To donate visit: www.justgiving.com/Chanel-Goodman.
