WI: Next Thursday's meeting (5th May) of the Catsfield WI will start at 2.30pm in the Village Hall. This will be the Resolutions meeting when members will be asked to vote for the resolution that should go through to the AGM of the WI for a national vote. We also hope to play some Bingo, which should cause a lot of laughs and be good fun! Members are reminded to bring their orders from the bulb catalogue with the money to pay and also that tickets will be on sale for the lunch to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen on Saturday 11th June in the Village Hall. This is open to WI members and a guest and tickets are priced at £8 each. This will include a main course, dessert, tea or coffee, Birthday Cake and a raffle. If you can't be at the meeting next week, you can telephone Ann Davey 830477 or Jill Jarrett 316309 to reserve a place.

Parochial Church Council Meeting: (thanks to Mike Cooper for this report)

About twenty-five parishioners attended last week’s Annual Parochial Church Meeting at St. Laurence’s, the Rector being in the chair. The first meeting was to elect church wardens for the year and was open to all who live in the Civil parish of Catsfield, a relic from 19th Century when the Parochial Church Council used to run all village affairs before Parish Councils were created. Jane Overall and Mike Cooper were the only candidates again and were therefore duly elected. The Rector thanked them for their work over the last year and said they were a good team as their skills complemented one another.

The second meeting was only open to those on the church’s electoral role which presently stood at 80. The Rector thanked Adam Shoesmith who was resigning from the post of maintaining this record, for all his work. Many years ago the PCC adopted the rule that parishioners should only serve for 3 years on the PCC and this year John Berryman, Brenda Leece and Brenda Ingram were due to step down. They too were thanked for their work and input whilst on the Council. Sandra Shoobridge and Sandra Creasy had already offered to stand and were duly elected and the PCC hoped to co-opt one more member in due course.

The Rector then read out the report of the Activities of the PCC throughout the last year and this was followed by an explanation of the Church’s financial position from the Treasurer James Ireson. Income exceeded expenditure which was good but the 5 year report from the appointed architect (The Quinquennial) had highlighted the need for extensive repairs to the roof. To this end an application had been submitted for a grant, the result of which would be known in the summer with a possible start date early in 2017. Other remedial works were being planned for this year. Other reports were heard regarding the fabric, goods and ornaments of the Church, the Sunday School and the Caring & Sharing Scheme all with an optimistic note. Meeting closed at 8.30 pm.

Sports Report: (thanks as always to Ann Davey)

Our football season has been long and arduous punctuated by some disappointing results, not least last Saturday when we lost 11 - 0 at home to champions Northiam. That is not a misprint, we actually conceded eleven goals. We are definitely going down to division 3 which may suit us better. So, to put it in modern speak “going forward this gives us an ideal opportunity to re-group and exploit our skills”, or words to that effect. We have only been able to play seven home league matches due to the pitch being too wet through most of the season. However, a pleasant duty before the match was the presentation of a farewell present to retiring secretary Colin White. Colin has been one of our most enthusiastic and loyal players for many years and it will be sad to let him go. Tomorrow we play Peche Hill Select at Tilekiln, when we hope to finish the season with a win before moving forward to September with renewed enthusiasm etc.

Cricket is due to start on Sunday at home versus Little Common with the help of no rain, a drying wind and still a lot of work to be done during the week. Some rolling has been possible, but we managed to save the £150 fee for hiring a heavy roller last weekend, when the conditions weren’t suitable.
