The first meeting of the new Village Fete Committee was held on Monday 21st October in Hermon Cottage. The group reviewed previous fetes and had a lively discussion about the way forward. There was general agreement that we wish to retain everything that has made the fete a success in the past as well as to explore ways in which we can move it forward into an exciting new phase of development.

Catsfield WI will meet on Thursday 7th November at the earlier time of 2pm for the Annual Meeting.

The last fund raising event of the year for the parish church of St Laurence will be the Christmas Market held on Saturday 30th November from 10am – 2pm in the Village Hall. Entrance 50p and children free. There will be all the usual stalls and some challenging games, with tea, coffee and ploughman’s lunches available and Father Christmas will be in his grotto. The St Laurence Church Recipe Book will be launched and available to buy, filled with favourite recipes contributed by local residents. If you can help by contributing any goods for the stalls, please contact Jane on 893431. Fancy goods, bric-a-brac, bathroom items, raffle, tombola, cakes, plants, books and Christmas fare all gratefully received.

Hot on the heels of the Christmas Market follows the eagerly awaited show of the year – the CADS annual pantomime, on 5th, 6th and 7th December! Get your tickets from Catsfield Village Store and prepare to laugh till you cry at the antics of the cast performing in ‘Panto Goes West’.

Two draws for the football teams last Saturday. The cub reporter actually went to Wittersham to watch the lads, immediately being asked to retrieve two of the club’s footballs from a huge bramble patch next to a wonderful orchard behind the goal. Must remember to arrive slightly late next time! Charlie Morgan and Jack Graham were the scorers in the 2 - 2 draw, which we should have won. The seconds drew at home 3 - 3 against Sedlescombe. 2nd November sees the first team play Herstmoneux at home, while the seconds are away to Hampden Park.

Other news from the Playing Field is that the whole field has been vertidrained, which means that the ground has been spiked so that the compacted soil allows better drainage. This should help a great deal with the wet patches.

I was interested to read of the bombing of ‘The Plough’ at Crowhurst during the second World War, when remembering the mother of a school friend who biked along Powdermill Lane with a German bomber overhead so close she could see his face. I wonder if this was the same occasion? Frightening times.

The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library will be in its usual place outside the Village Hall from 3.45pm until 4.15pm on Wednesday 6th November.
