Catsfield village voice - March 23

The Jubilee choir will meet from 5 - 6 pm on Friday afternoon in the village hall, to continue to practise the popular programme of English music chosen by Barbara and David Wilson. It was a lovely surprise to have Bob Andrew at last week`s rehearsal and to hear him say how splendid the music sounded. Praise indeed. Ring Barbara on 893201 if you would like to join the choir.

This Saturday the 24th, the WI hold their annual Jumble Sale in the village hall between 10 am and 12 noon. Jumble may be left at the hall from 8.30 am on the Saturday morning. There will be WI home made cakes, and all the usual stalls, books, bric-a-brac and clothes etc.

with cups of tea and coffee to keep you going. The Jumble Sale is in aid of our 2012 charity, Admiral Nurses, and the cakes will be sold in aid of WI funds.

Entrance is just 20p, children, free, and there is free parking at the village hall.

There is a programme of events to fund raise for our Parish Church, St Laurence, starting on Saturday 21st of April with a Jumble and Toy sale from 10 - 12 noon in the village hall. On Sunday 13th may there is a sponsored walk at 2.30 pm at Ashburnham and a Beetle Drive at 6.30 pm on June 22nd, in the village hall.

The Mothering Sunday service at St Laurence last Sunday saw the first three rows in the church packed with Ninfield scouts, large and small, who carried up their banners at the start of the service with great dignity and behaved impeccably. Our Rector, Father Michael, wore his Scout Leader`s scarf and toggle and conducted a service which was just right for the young congregation. His sermon was about a typical teenager called Barry, who grunted and avoided his mother with typical teenage charm, until he went to camp, and admitted, when everyone else said they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves, that he had missed home.

The teenager his mum welcomed home was a very much nicer person. One of the Scouts thoroughly enjoyed pretending to be Barry and a real Scout Leader called Adam, a member of the choir, played himself.

Saturday night’s “Right Royal Quiz” run by the Jubilee Committee was another outstanding success, with £645 profit going towards the Jubilee expenses.  The Hall was full to capacity and John Overall’s well researched questions covered such wide ranging royal connections as the crown jewels, famous portrayals of kings and queens, musical royalty, stamps, Commonwealth anthems and modern lines of succession.  All very challenging and enjoyable.  No-one does quizzes like John and his “ lovely assistant “ Jane and how lucky we are to have such talent on the Committee. Picnics were eaten, wine drunk, the travelling gnome naming competition appeared, the raffle was drawn and the first prize to the quiz winners of a pair of gnomes was, if not gratefully received, at least weren’t handed back.  CADS are already preparing their school prom disco for 28th April, so watch out for the posters, tickets will be available from the village shop as usual.
