Charitable Lady Sarah Clutton ‘dies peacefully’

Lady Sarah, third daughter of the late Duke Bernard, the 16th Duke of Norfolk, died ‘peacefully’ on Sunday evening (June 14), a spokeswoman for the Angmering Park Estate said.

Lady Sarah was key in the creation of Sussex’s only children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House, in Poling, which was opened in 2003.

Prior to this, in 1996, she became the president of St Barnabas House Hospice, following the death of her mother, Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk. At the time of her death, she was Chestnut Tree House’s and St Barnabas House’s honorary president.

A spokeswoman for the organisation today said they were extremely saddened to hear of the death of the ‘much-loved’ figure.

“For the past twenty years, she has been an incredible support, inspiration and a real friend to both Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and St Barnabas House adult hospice,” the spokeswoman said. “We owe her a huge amount for kindnesses small and large, not least for the land on which Chestnut Tree House is built.”

Lady Sarah gave the hospice a 125-year lease – with a rent of one dozen mixed lilies and a new £1 coin on her birthday each year.

A spokeswoman for the Angmering Park Estate said arrangements for Lady Sarah’s funeral were being organised.
