Charity boss retires

The Hastings and Rother Horizons Community Learning project has been given a boost by the Rotary Club of Senlac.

The club made a donation to the charity and also honoured its CEO Sonia Plato, who is retiring at the end of February after 27 years of service with the charity.

Sonia was appointed CEO in 2011 when Horizons became a Community Interest Charity.

Horizons provides free learning facilities for people aged 16 upwards both in class and home situations.

The charity also provides creche facilities.

Horizons works very closely with employers to provide job and training opportunities. Over the years many local people have benefited by learning to read, gaining educational qualifications and finding work.

The elderly are not ignored; home based lessons on surfing the net are available too.

Colin Goldsack, from Senlac Rotary, said: “Sonia was presented with a certificate and a cheque towards the work of Horizons Community Learning by President Roger Young.

Horizons is welcoming a new CEO, Tracey Rose, who will join them on February 22.

Tracey built up and managed the nine Children’s Centres across Hastings and St Leonards for a number of years before going on to manage the service across East Sussex.

She has been a supportive partner of Horizons over many years and helped them to grow and develop from a small organisation.

Sonia will be working alongside Tracey for a month to achieve a smooth transition.
