Charity seeks reading volunteers to help in Rye schools

Beanstalk, a national literacy charity, is searching for people to volunteer as Reading Helpers in primary schools in and around Rye in a bid to raise literacy levels and to inspire confidence in struggling and reluctant readers.

Volunteers are asked to spare 90 minutes twice a week to make a difference to a child in the area.

Kate Rumsby, recruitment executive for Beanstalk in Kent and Medway, said: “Last year 34 percent of children left primary school unable to read to the required level and unfortunately it is a problem that has been getting worse.

“Beanstalk works with schools to transform children’s life chances by supporting volunteers who go into primary schools and help children who have fallen behind with their reading.

“Beanstalk reading helpers have a direct impact on changing the life of a child by spending just three hours a week, giving them the skills, confidence and imagination they need to succeed in life.”

Volunteers will spend 30 minutes in a one-to-one session with a child twice a week to try to bring the joy into reading, by reading fun books together, chatting and playing games.

Very importantly, Beanstalk sessions are meant to be very different from normal school and are relaxed, informal and fun.
