Charity welcomes new rules

CHARITY Dogs Trust has welcomed new legislation to reduce cruelty to animals.

The charity, which has a rehoming centre in Brighton Road, Shoreham, took part in consultations for the new Animal Welfare Act.

Clarissa Baldwin, Dogs Trust chief executive, said: "We have very high hopes for this long- awaited Act, particularly the duty of care, which will provide much greater protection to the 6.5million dogs in the UK."

The Animal Welfare Act, which came into effect on Friday, consolidates more than 20 pieces of legislation into one, eliminating many loopholes in the current system, according to the charity.

The new duty of care means owners and keepers are legally obliged to ensure the welfare of their animals.
