Charlie's Arun's darlin for the day

CELEBRITY gardener Charlie Dimmock visited Littlehampton on Thursday as part of a new television series she's filming, called River Walks.

Charlie journeyed up the River Arun, from Littlehampton to Amberley, via Arundel.

Her journey began at Climping's West Beach, where she spent half an hour with fossil enthusiast Roy Shepherd, who gave Charlie a lesson in discovering more about the earth's history by looking at what is right beneath our feet.

Charlie said she loved the beautiful beach at Climping and confessed to having "caught the fossil hunting bug".

Next stop was the Hillyards boatyard in Rope Walk, where traditional wooden vessels have been built since the turn of the century.

Charlie was welcomed aboard the Nancy Blackett, the classic Hillyard's boat once owned by children's author Arthur Ransome.

Current skipper Bryan Bonser showed Charlie around the magnificent boat, which has been lovingly restored.

Charlie then hitched a ride up river with Littlehampton harbour master Colin Hitchcock, who shared with her his vast knowledge of the river.

At Arundel Castle, head gardener Gerry Kelsey gave Charlie a grand tour of the beautiful gardens. Charlie was in her element and helped with the strawberry picking.

From the castle, it was just a short trip to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, where manager James Sharpe showed Charlie around. The last leg of the river walk took Charlie and the television crew to Amberley and the working museum.

River Walks is a five-part series, being made for ITV Meridian. The series starts on Thursday, November 3.
