Charm offensive for new Bognor mayor

New Bognor Regis town mayor Sandra Daniells wants to bring some of the charm back to the resort.

Mrs Daniells said she was aware of the public's anxiety about the future of Bognor. "I want everyone to work together to see some sort of positive change in the town," she said.

"I know people would like to see less trouble on the streets. We need to work together as much as we can to try to make that happen.

"I've lived in Bognor for 25 years and the town has lost some of its small town seaside charm. I'm interested in reviving it.

"I became a councillor to get things done," she said. "I thought there was no point sitting around moaning about matters if I didn't do anything about it."

Mrs Daniells, 49, of Sutherland Close, was chosen as the town's senior elected representative at Monday's annual meeting of the town council.

Town councillors were tied 8-8 after a secret ballot between Conservative Mrs Daniells and former town mayor Liberal Democrat Jeanette Warr.

But outgoing town mayor Eileen Anderson used her casting vote in her last act of her year of office in favour of Mrs Daniells.

Care home owner and manager Mrs Daniells, who is a qualified nurse, was elected as one of the town council's Pevensey ward members in a by-election about six years ago - a year after she had become a district councillor for the area.

She left the council chamber for the Picturedrome debate which followed her election along with one of her two sons, town councillor Adam Cunard, who is the cinema's current operator.

Independent councillor Jim Brooks was chosen as the new deputy town mayor.
