Cllr Sharp, 50, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.

Her husband told the Observer she was ‘conscious and alert’ and was due to undergo an operation on her shoulder.

Cllr Sharp has been an avid campaigner for road safety in Chichester, and masterminded the 20’s Plenty campaign, which lowered speed limits in the city’s residential roads.

Police have now launched an appeal for any witnesses to the collision.

A police spokesman said: “A female cyclist was taken to hospital with serious neck and arm injuries after being involved in a collision with a car.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Basin Road at 8.14am where the 50-year-old woman from Chichester had been in collision with a Peugeot.

“She was released from under the car and treated by paramedics before being airlifted to hospital in Southampton.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Poole.
