Children compete for Young Mathematician of the Year

The Year 6 children from Edward Bryant, Downview and Walberton and Binsted primary schools took part in a county heat of the Young Mathematician of the Year award run by the national tuition centres, Explore Learning and the NRich project at the University of Cambridge.

The pupils had to solve problems and the highest scoring schools after the second round were Walberton and Binsted and Edward Bryant.

Their scores were compared to those of 1,500 other schools around the country.

The top five went on to compete in the final at Cambridge University.

Richard Waddington, Edward Bryant’s deputy head teacher, led the competition.

He said: “This is an exciting event that allows more able mathematicians to tackle problems and find solutions.

“There was a great buzz as the problems were being worked on.”

The head teacher of Downview Primary School, Mandy Williams, said the children enjoyed having the time to focus solely on maths: “The competition was a great opportunity to showcase their mathematical knowledge and understanding, and their teamwork skills.”
