Children explore life below stairs

Years 3 and 4 from Castlewood Primary School, Southwater, recently enjoyed a trip to Petworth House, dressing up as Victorians and learning how to make tea properly, lay a tray, and make butter pats.

The butler at Petworth gave the children a tour of the House and taught them how to bow and curtsey. In the estate office they explored the role of a housemaid during the Victorian era and beat a carpet, polished brass and laid a fire.

One Year 3 student commented: “I really loved the whole day but it was such hard work!”

Katie Smith, Year 4 teacher, said: “The children had a really fun time and in so doing gained a real knowledge of life as a servant in those days. The work that they will produce as a result of this trip will be fabulous.”
