Children get a choice of summer things to do in North Bersted

Children's choice play sessions have begun in North Bersted.

The free summer holiday play scheme on the Trees Estate is being hosted by play rangers who held their first play time on the open space between Berghestede Road and Stoneage Close earlier this month.

Thirty children had the chance to enjoy themselves in an activity of their choice.

Jason Ward, Arun District Council's senior play ranger, said: "The event went very well. We just took the kit to the children and told them they could do what they liked.

"They enjoyed themselves with parachutes and rolling around in the inside of tyres. Football was another popular choice.

"There is not a lot else for them to do around the estate."

Arun's councillor for the environment, Paul Wotherspoon, said: "We always try to provide top-quality recreational opportunities in our open spaces.

"With this innovative community-based scheme, young people have the chance to enjoy new forms of play while making good use of their local parks."

Activities on the estate supervised by the two play rangers will continue into next month.

All the sessions take place between 2pm and 4pm at the same location. Some will have themes, though other activities will be available.

Today sees den building, with arts and crafts tomorrow. Sessions next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will feature a man hunt, water day, arts and crafts and fire building and cooking.

They carry on for four days a week until September 2.
