It has hailed the council as a Tidy Up Champion '“ one of only a handful in the country to earn that status.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, cabinet member for the environment, said: "This really is wonderful news for the council and for residents.

"It is a priority for us to keep the district clean and safe, and this Tidy Up Champion status means our work and success have been recognised nationally and as an example of best practice.

"We are always looking for community-spirited volunteers who can spare a little time, perhaps just a morning or an afternoon each month, to help us improve their local environment.

"It might include identifying and reporting problems such as fly-tipping, graffiti, dirty back yards, empty houses that people can get into, dog fouling and other environmental issues."

Posters, flyers and phone box adverts will spread the word over the coming weeks and the Keep Britain Tidy van will tour the district.

Street scene officer Dan Cox said: "The Big Tidy Up is for everyone.

"Whether you want to do something individually, with friends or neighbours, or with organisations you belong to, this is your chance to make a difference."
