Children learn how to stay safe

Students and Pupils at St Mary's school and college in Wrestwood Road took part in a Personal, Health, Safety and Education day.

Children took it in turns to visit one of five sessions, which were on hand washing, safety in the swimming pool, personal safety and a talk from both PC Ellis from Bexhill Police Station and Elaine Wink from east Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Elaine Wink talked to pupils about fire safety in the home, what to do in the event of a fire, and showed a video on fire safety. At the end of the session pupils were allowed to try on a fireman’s suit and helmet which they all really enjoyed.

PC Ellis spoke to pupils about stranger danger and the people in the community you can trust if you are lost or afraid. At the end of the session pupils were “arrested” and were able to put on the handcuffs.

Tracie Wilson, head of St Mary’s catering team, held a session on hygiene and how to wash your hands probably to avoid spreading germs. At the end of the session all the pupils washed their hands and were awarded a sticker if they washed correctly.

Andy Daughtery the St Mary’s swimming pool manager held a session on safety in the swimming pool including how to be safe in the swimming pool and how to assess an injury and who to call for help.

Sign language tutor Rachael Gildersleeve held a session on “PANTS”, a course advising children on personal safety including “no means no” and advising who to talk to if they are upset or worried. At the end children were asked to write down 5 people who they feel safe with and who will help them if needed.
