Chimney collapse in St Leonards damages car

A chimney on top of a building in St Leonards collapsed yesterday evening (Wednesday, July 6).

The incident happened in Sea Road before 7pm.

Debris was left strewn across the road and a parked car suffered extensive damage as bricks fell on it.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Hastings received reports of a dangerous structure at a property at the end of Grosvenor Gardens, St Leonards.

A spokesman said: “A chimney on the fifth floor was reported to be in imminent danger of collapse. Crews used an aerial ladder platform. A building inspector attended and the Highways Agency put up a cordon around the property. Local residents were evacuated.”
