Continuing a tradition started eight years ago, the Christmas crib went on show at The Elmer Hotel, in Elmer Road.

Father William Marston, vicar at St Nicholas Church in Middleton, explained: “The baby Jesus started his life in a local inn, so we thought it would be fitting for us to start our crib from our local inn, The Elmer.

“Now, it is visiting local families, where each family will keep it overnight, take a sheep and pass the crib on to the next family.

“The sheep will then be brought back in the crib service on Christmas Eve, as we all start to celebrate. The children love the chance to be welcomed by the landlord and landlady each year.”

Darren Brewer, manager at The Elmer Hotel, said: “We were proud to have the Nativity crib back again this year.

“It has been enjoyed by lots of children from the church, Sunday school and those visiting the pub for lunch with their families.”
