Church in the park is a big success in the town

CROWDS gathered in Hotham Park in Bognor Regis for a vibrant celebration of the Christian faith.

St Mary Magdalene Church in South Bersted invited Christians from across the town to join together and support a nationwide initiative which backs persecuted Christians with an outdoor
service.

Praise in the Park on Sunday (May 19) saw the church’s vicar, The Rev Tim Crook, say: “We are so grateful for the freedom we have in this country to meet together and celebrate God.

“We now want to stand in solidarity with Christians across the world who do not have this freedom – who live in fear and may be worshipping outside as their church buildings have been burned down
or destroyed.”

White doves were released during the service as a symbol of this freedom and of the Holy Spirit.

The event celebrated the festival of Pentecost and the Anglican Rural Dean of Arundel and Bognor, Canon Mark Standen, read from the Bible and explained the meaning of Pentecost as the day when Jesus sent his holy spirit to be with Christians until He returns.

Bognor residents and visitors of all ages gathered to enjoy the afternoon’s events.

Mr Crook said: “After a rainy morning, the
sun came out at just the right time and we were all able to enjoy sharing tea together on the grass and participating in the
event.”

Traditional hymns alongside modern songs made it an event for everyone.

Rising Brighton-based musical star Melissa
captured everyone’s attention with three live performances from her debut album, Beyond
the Frame.
