Claverhamturns sixty

The school was originally called Claverham County Secondary School, taking the name from the Anglo-Saxon description of an area meaning ‘place of clover’ or ‘good pasture’.

It became a community college in 1973, introducing adult education classes to the provision on offer.

At this time, it was one of only three community colleges in East Sussex.

During the eighties and early nineties, further provisions were added. The Battle Area Sports Centre and Claverham Day Nursery, continued the college’s evolution as an important centre for the wider community.

When Claverham first opened its doors in 1955, there were only 250 pupils, eight classrooms, a library, staff room, wood work room and a domestic science room.

The College now has over 1150 pupils, with over fifty classrooms, including cutting edge ICT suites and science laboratories, an innovative eco-building and a number of pre-fabricated temporary buildings.

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary, Claverham is planning a tea party for some of the group of 265 pupils who began their education at the College in April 1955.
