Cleanest place in Sussex

ROTHER is the cleanest place in Sussex - and that's official.

The Audit Commission says that only 0.5% of the relevant areas were dirty.

A Rother spokesman said this week: "Rother District Council continues to put the importance of clean neighbourhoods as a real priority by working in partnership with organisations such as the Safer Rother Partnership who have targeted graffiti and fly-tipping as well as the speedy removal of abandoned vehicles."

A further article listing Rother as one of the five cleanest districts in the whole country also appeared in the May 20 edition of the local government magazine First.

Cllr Ian Jenkins, cabinet member and portfolio holder said: "This report acknowledges the real support that we have from staff and our residents all over the district in making our area a safer and cleaner place in which to live in. This is real team work producing results we should all be proud of."

The accolade comes on top of news that five Rother beaches have been awarded Seaside Awards by ENCAMS, the environmental charity which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

Award-winning beaches are Bexhill and Camber in the resort category and Cooden Beach, Normans Bay and Winchelsea Beach in the rural category.

"This is the second year running that these beaches have achieved this award reflecting the continuing efforts the council puts in to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness across the district.

"Rother District Council is extremely proud of the continuing high quality of the service and facilities which it seeks to provide to both its residents and visitors to this wonderful part of the country."
