Along with teams from Hayling Island and Portsmouth, Selsey Coastguard volunteers responded to reports of a casualty in the water and a casualty and dog stuck in the mud at around 5.45pm on Wednesday (February 17).

A Coastguard rescue helicopter searched the area and located a casualty in the water. After bringing this person ashore, rescue teams also recovered the second casualty and their dog from a kayak, which was stuck in the mud.

A Coastguard spokesperson said: "[They] were advised about secondary drowning and to get checked out at hospital, after they had swallowed a lot of water.

"The first informant did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard after his father capsized and ended up in the water and was struggling.

"He also did the right thing by staying in his kayak after he got stuck on the mud and waited for help to arrive."
