College students come up with right chemistry at science fest

YOUNG chemists from Rye College had a chance to shine when they took part in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at Brighton University on June 13.

A team from Rye College, comprising Holly Eldridge and Marcus Popple in Year 7, with Isobel Wall and Jade Ryding from Year 8, were set a series of challenges by the University involving team work, communication skills, creativity and, of course, chemistry.

All the work took place in an impressive chemistry laboratory and was followed by a jaw dropping display of what chemistry can do by the University’s Dr Hal involving many flashes, bangs and colour changes.

Rye College head of science Martin Estall said: “Students even witnessed a boat float on nothing.

“The whole team had a great day out and were awarded prizes at the end.”
