College's 2000th student celebrates status with bubbly

Student Joe Hindle can toast his new-found computing skills in Bognor Regis with champagne.

He was presented with the bubbly to celebrate his special status as the 2,000th person to enrol at the town's outreach centre of Chichester College.

College principal Dr Richard Parker handed over the drink, a certificate and a 100 voucher to be spent on a future course to Mr Hindle on Friday, January 23.

Mr Hindle said: "It's interesting coming here. The tutors are interested in helping you.

"You can progress quickly here with all the help. And it's so easy to get here from where I live."

The 73-year-old Cavendish Road resident enrolled at the centre in the High Street three months ago.

A former draughtsman, he wanted to update the IT techniques he had gained before he moved to Bognor in 2007.

He attends the centre for four hours a day every day and has already completed a City and Guilds presentation graphics course and is working on word processing.

Next to come is the world of databases and spreadsheets.

He then expects to move on to the tougher European Computer Driving Licence.

The outreach centre has 50 computers for students and seven part-time tutors.

It has been open about nine years and those studying there range in age from 19 to 96.

Dr Parker said: "The centre means that people living in Bognor don't have to go to Chichester to get IT training. Its site in the High Street makes it easy to get to.

"People such as Joe fully justify the investment we have put into the centre. We have every intention of keeping it going. It is a piece of our overall success story."
