Concerns over '˜dangerous' workmen's parking in Bexhill

Paul Sleet believes workmen at the Pebsham Lane site are creating blind spots on corners and making the road too narrow for cars to pass each other.

Responding to the complaint, developer Barratt Homes said its staff will be immediately informed to park safely on the roads until there is space within the development.

But Mr Sleet said the current situation is a nightmare and it is only a matter of time before an accident happens.

“Now that the building has started at the rear of Pebsham Lane we have the situation many of us feared,” he said.

“The inconsiderate and downright dangerous parking of contractor’s vehicles on the corner of Seabourne road and Pebsham Lane.

“Trying to turn into Seabourne is a nightmare, with cars parked right on the corner, sometimes even sticking right out.

“With large vans blocking the view down the road, it is only a matter of time before an accident occurs.”

Barratt Homes is currently building more than 100 dwellings on land off Pebsham Lane.

The company was given planning permission by Rother District Council in May last year to build 108 homes, together with associated car and cycle parking, open space and play areas.

Contracts manager Gerry Rice said: “We always strive to minimise disruption during construction of our new developments and are grateful to local people for raising this issue with us.

“We will immediately advise our staff and contractors to ensure they are parking safely and as soon as we have space on the site we will request that everyone 
parks within the 
development.

“Any local residents who wish to alert us to problems during construction can call us on 01483 505533.”

However, Mr Sleet said the problem will only get worse when people start to move into the houses.

“I realise these cars and vans need to park somewhere, but not right up to the corner,” he said.

“Are they too lazy to walk a few more yards? We have already had the grass verge destroyed when a bus got stuck on it trying to pass a tarmac lorry. This will get much, much worse when the houses start to go up and even more workers appear on site.

“God help us when all these houses are built and 2,000 more cars try to get on to Ravenside roundabout every day.”
