OBITUARY: Many will be sad to hear of the death of Evelyn Randall at the grand age of 93. Always known as Eve to her friends, she and her late husband Alan were residents of Cooksbridge for a number of years. Eve eventually moved to Barcombe. She had, until recently, been a regular member of the congregation at St Peter’s Church, Offham. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her funeral is on Friday January 27 at 2pm at St Peter’s Church, followed by burial at Hamsey Church.

MIXED RECYCLING BIN: Lewes District Council Waste and Recycling have agreed that a recycling waste bin can be installed by the Cooksbridge bus stop. At the Pc meeting in November, it was agreed that Hamsey Parish Council will pay £697.38 for the bin plus £66 for the installation to be carried out by LDC. The mixed waste and recycling bin, manufactured by Wybone, is currently being procured on behalf of the PC by LDC. It will consist of four compartments (general waste, cans/plastic, bottles glass bottles and paper) and will be emptied by LDC. The bin will be coloured dark blue and will be located between the bus shelter and the telephone box in the centre of Cooksbridge. The A257 lay-by where fruit is sold is currently being cleared by Chailey Litter Pickers, although it falls within Hamsey parish. Hamsey PC are investigating options regarding a bin to tackle the problems of littering by motorists and approval was granted at the November PC meeting for the associated costs.

DOG FOULING: is becoming an increasing problem within the parish with the actions of a thoughtless minority affecting the life of the majority of residents. The issue was discussed at the November Pc meeting when it was agreed that the LDC Dog Warden service would be contacted to see what might be done. LDC have responded to advise that their policy is to educate rather than fine dog owners with respect to the problem. Hamsey PC will be evaluating in due course a number of potential options suggested by LDC including the possibility of imposing/collecting fines. In the meantime, residents are advised that if they see anyone with a dog, not clearing up, and they have a vehicle, take the number. LDC will issue a fine and are especially keen to crack down on commercial dog walkers who rarely clean up due to having several dogs to manage.

LITTER HEROES: Following an appeal in the summer edition of the Hamsey News, there has been an encouraging start with some members of the community willing to adopt their local patches. Three residents came forward to adopt their patch. These residents clear their area weekly or daily, picking up the rubbish as it builds and what a difference they have made. Other residents are picking up rubbish on an ad-hoc basis. The PC will be doing all they can to encourage more residents to adopt their local areas as a key initiative to complement the quarterly parish litter picks.

WINTER BEAUTY: It must have been all the mild weather we had in the autumn as the winter jasmine has never looked so lively and is still blooming. The hellebores are starting to show their heads and I already have a few daffodils in bloom. Thankfully the cold snap did not do much harm, although there could be more snow and ice to come.

DECORATIONS: Everywhere always seems so bare after the Christmas Tree and decorations have been taken down once again, but I recently read that the Arndale Centre in Eastbourne still have their Christmas lights and trees and can’t turn the lights off as the company that supplied them went into administration just before Christmas.
