Coroner calls for cot to be withdrawn after seven-week-old Haywards Heath baby asphyxiated

Grace was asleep in her cot - a Bed Nest bedside crib. However, she was found by her mother at 10am with her head over the edge of the crib and her neck resting on a low plastic edge.

West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield has issued a report to prevent future deaths – and is calling for the cot manufacturer to respond to the report.

The report reads: “Grace had a bruise on the left side of her neck.

“It appear Grace had managed to get her head over the edge of the side of the crib.

“Due to the weight of her head she was prevented from returning it and moving clear. The weight of her head on the side of the cot has restricted her air supply and subsequently led to her death.”

The provisional cause of death is that Grace died of Asphyxia in her crib.

The Coroner believes urgent action should be taken to prevent future deaths and has issued a Regulation 28 Report to Prevent Future Deaths.

The Coroner has discretion to issue such a report when she feels it is in the public interest.

The report has been sent to all relevant parties.

The Coroner has not yet completed her investigation and an inquest has not yet started.

Therefore no conclusions have been published and there have been no findings of liability.
