Council chairs here to stay

Near 80-year-old tables and chairs in the Bognor Regis Town Hall will have to last another 12 months.

A bid by officers to have the ageing furniture replaced has been rejected by Arun district councillors. The 23,500 scheme was among the capital spending bids axed.

Cllr Sylvia Olliver said she believed the furniture dated from the town hall's opening in 1929.

'I spent 17 very uncomfortable years slipping and sliding on those chairs,' she said. They gave a bad impression to users.

Cllr Paul Wells said the furniture was beyond further use.

But council leader Cllr Gill Brown said tough decisions were needed to ensure council tax was kept down.

However, she agreed the chairs were crippling.
